You are thinking of the Hebrew word "Kipper" which referred to the cover (lid) on the Arc. That is the "mercy seat" (Gnadenstuhl) Luther refers to. He does this because the Greek "hilasteron" is the word used in the LXX to translate the Hebrew "kipper".

You are also right that how we interpret the kipper is pivotal to how we understand Romans 3:25, and I also think you are correct in saying that it is about purification. Hebrews where is says "without blood there is no forgiveness of sin" says in that very same verse that the reason for the blood is purification.

Thanks for the enjoyable thoughts. Doesn't the wor...

Thanks for the enjoyable thoughts. Doesn't the word hilasterion come from the word "lid" (which Luther called the Mercy Seat)? It would seem then that our understanding of this word would, in a large sense, come from how we interpret what happened at "the lid".

When you read about the day of atonement in Leviticus, it is all about purification of the people (i.e. - healing, a new heart and a right spirit, etc.):

“On that day the ritual is to be performed to purify them from all their sins, so that they will be ritually clean.” (Leviticus 16:30 – GN)

“The High Priest, properly ordained and consecrated to succeed his father, is to perform the ritual of purification. He shall put on the priestly garments and perform the ritual to purify the Most Holy Place, the rest of the Tent of the LORD's presence, the altar, the priests, and all the people of the community. These regulations are to be observed for all time to come. This ritual must be performed once a year to purify the people of Israel from all their sins. So Moses did as the LORD had commanded.” (Leviticus 16:32-34 – GN)

This would seem to fit well with the context. The righteousness/goodness/love of God revealed at the Cross (and simultaneously, the badness of Satan) restores in me a newfound trust and love for God's character and his principle of other-centered love.

- Brad
